System Description and Functions:

·         High quality, Stand-alone (no PC required for image capture) video imaging system for simple and rapid optimisation and capture of images from fluorescent gels and blots, visible stained protein gels and blots, autoradiograms, microtitre plates and colony plates. Allows imaging of fluorescent gels of up to 21x26cm in size (if supplied with BTS 26M transilluminator).

·         “Real time” image display on 5.6” built-in TFT viewing screen features continuous video mode with high update frequency of 0.04s (25 images per second) that facilitates easy gel positioning, zooming and focussing.

·         Exceptionally user-friendly exposure time adjustment using + and – button (to increase or decrease integration) on the control unit keypad (built into darkroom cabinet. 17 pre-set integration times up to maximum of 10 seconds.

·         The saturation monitor indicates any region of the image that exceeds the maximum possible intensity (=255 grey levels). Activated/de-activated by pushing a button on the keypad. Saturated regions indicated by “flashing” onscreen.

·         Informative text can be included or excluded from the image screen (and therefore the print out) at the push of a button. The unit can be configured to include system status text (Live/Freeze mode, integration time, saturationON/OFF, image saving file format) and/or current date and time (from internal system clock).

·         The image on the viewing screen (with or without selected text) can be printed to the thermal video printer at any time (prior to or after capture) at the push of the printer button.

·         Image can be saved to Compact-flash (CF) card (1 x 128Mb supplied) at the push of a button as TIFF, BMP or JPG file formats. Saved files can then be transferred onto PC or Macintosh computers via a card reader (1 USB type supplied).

·         Image can also be transferred to a computer via a network (LAN) connection. OmniDOC is assigned an IP address and images can then be downloaded through OmniDOC software.

·         Exposure time automatically recorded in a GLP file (saved and transferred with image).

·         OmniDOC PC software supplied allows image processing/modification, annotation and basic analysis. Also allows simple download of images from OmniDOC memory via network.

·         PC modified/annotated images can be transferred back to the OmniDOC unit (via CF card) using the READ button, displayed on the viewing screen and printed to the thermal printer.

System Components and Specifications:

·         CCD video camera (SONY): High quality 8-bit CCD video camera S/N ratio 58 DB, Resolution 752 x 582, compact size, single cable connection to acquisition board

·         High quality zoom lens 8-48 (6x) manual zoom lens, simple and rapid to adjust, enables field of view ranging from 4x5cm up to >21 x 26cm. F 1.0 enables easy viewing of many objects in real time (no integration necessary) for easier zoom/focus adjustment. Holds focus throughout a substantial portion of zoom range. High performance band pass UV/IR filter transmits visible light in the 600nm (ethidium bromide) region while completely blocking UV and IR light from transilluminator.

·         Camera mounting unit, fixes easily to top of darkroom, no positional adjustment necessary. Camera bracket fixes with single screw to camera mounting unit automatically positioning camera horizontally while allowing vertical adjustment

·         OmniDOC control unit built into darkroom cabinet includes input connector for camera cable and 2 x video outputs for thermal printer and video monitor. Also includes built-in 5.6” TFT viewing screen (for sharp image preview) compact flash drive for saving images to high capacity compact flash (CF) cards and membrane keypad (which can be wiped clean with damp cloth) including 7 keys as follows:

1) + and – keys for increase/decrease exposure time with 17 pre-set exposure settings ranging from minimum of 40ms up to maximum of 10s.

2) LIVE/SAT. key for entering live (image acquisition) mode and ON/OFF saturation monitoring,

3) FREEZE/SAVE key for capturing (freezing) image on screen and saving image to CF card

4) READ key for reading and displaying images from a CF card

5) TEXT ON/OFF key for displaying/hiding on-screen text for printing.

6) SETUP button for entering set-up menu which includes the following functions:

I. Select file format for saving image to disk (TIFF, BMP or JPG)

II. Set-up network connection (assign IP address).

III. Set up time and date for screen display/print out.

IV. Set-up acquisition mode (positive/negative image).

V. Set-up on screen text options.

VI. Format Compact flash card

VII. View OmniDOC system information

VIII. Re-set unit to factory settings

·         Darkroom DBT-08 TFT: High quality hardwearing epoxy painted (chemical resistant) metal construction, sturdy hinged door allows complete access to interior with internal overhead white light illumination. UV safety door interlock switches off transilluminator when door is opened. Includes built-in control unit (see above).

·         Mini transilluminator BXT 20M mini unit, epoxy painted (chemical resistant) metal body, stainless steel filter frame, 20x20cm high quality long lifetime filter, 312nm maximum output, dual intensity (70/100%), 6 x 8W UV tubes. Solid-state electronics reduces unit weight and gives flicker-free switch on and operation with less heat generation.

·         Mitsubishi P93 thermal video printer. 256 grey levels, resolution 1022x600 (standard), image size 100x75mm (standard), plus 130x100 (large), 50x38mm and 67x50mm (mini). 1.5 and 1.7 x zoom functions, copy function, brightness, contrast and gamma controls. Print speed 5.6secs.

OmniDOC image transfer, processing and analysis software.

Allows images to be easily downloaded from the OmniDOC unit via the network. 12-bit image display can be adjusted using the Histogram function. Image processing functions include: annotation (text and symbols in variable sizes/fonts), crop image (before saving), brightness/contrast adjustments in real-time, image inversion, mirror image (vertical and horizontal), image rotation, automatic cancellation of image adjustments, print (to digital printer, e.g. inkjet), Good Laboratory Practise data display. Also includes image analysis functions: Draw vertical or horizontal lanes (semi

automatic), detect bands (automatic with user editing capability), assign molecular weights to standard lane (automatic or manual), save standard values for future recall, display molecular weight (or Rf value) results table, calculate band volumes with lane profile display (complete or averaged),

automatic band edge finding and manual threshold adjustment for background subtraction.
